3bd Architects Planning Design for Villa Tatu, Lubumbashi, DRC by mbachi kaluba

3bd Architects recently completes the Concept, Outline and Planning design (RIBA Stages 2 and 3) for a contemporary Villa in Lubumbashi, Democratic Republic of Congo. The private residence is predominantly built from concrete and steel. Although the main programme of the house is comprised on the ground floor, the level of the spaces varies in different rooms as you flow through the building, allowing the forms to appear floating or comfortably settled in their surroundings.

Inside the property sits a delightful but simple composition of building forms. As you wonder through the unique spaces you feel the joy and excitement reminiscent of a museum/gallery. Specific attention is given to the external areas which provide passive cooling, living and dining options day or night.

3bd Architects Concept Design for Bollorée Logistics Offices, Lubumbashi, DRC by mbachi kaluba

Bollore Logistics has hired 3bd Architects to lead the Feasibility Design (RIBA Stage 1) process for the new New Bollorée Logistics Head Offices in Lubumbashi, Democratic Republic of Congo.

We are honoured and excited about this project - The aim of the conceptual visualisation is to provoke a discussion. The concept design for the New Bollorée Logistics in Lubumbashi, Democratic Republic of Congo is by no means a representation of the final building, but a suggestion of materials, atmosphere and relative size to be constructed on the existing site off avenue Shangungu.

The Idea

In developing the scheme, the building had to be split into 4 levels and 4 zones to allow for the physical separation required for security and function.

MASSING STRATEGY ADJACENT

The new courtyard allowed us to bring natural light into the basement areas and the sculpted landscape allowed the building mass to blend into the surrounding context whilst maintaining views across to the Cathedral and existing Governor’s residence.

With the program and function in mind, we have allowed for playfulness in the sizes of perforations in the building facade to allow light and transparency into the appropriate spaces.

It will also soften, lighten and break up what appears to be a monolithic structure. Panoramic views towards the zoological gardens are maximised on the upper floors.

Copper Building Facade

The natural perforated copper cladding will age gracefully next to the composite perforated cladding. To give further aesthetic quality, the patterns will be developed in collaboration with local artists. This will result in a constantly changing appearance of the panels on the facade depending on the angle, intensity and colour of the daylight playing on them.
